Instructional Methods

Butler Community College uses a variety of different teaching delivery methods. To get the richest learning experience, select the delivery platform that best suits you.

Traditional

Courses taught on one of Butler’s physical campuses with an in-person class at a specific time and place. These courses use online platforms to help facilitate learning, and students may need to access online content to meet course expectations.

  • Be present on campus for in-person lectures in a designated classroom.
  • Access some materials through Canvas during the course.
  • Receive coursework and activities in an in-person environment.

Hyflex

Courses have regular meetings at specific times at one of Butler’s physical campuses. Students have the option to physically attend the course at that location, or interact through an online video system (i.e. Zoom). Students should prioritize in-person learning but may use the virtual format if issues arise. Activities and materials are accessed and available through the online system.

  • Attend in person or on a virtual platform
  • Access materials and activities both in-person and on Canvas.
  • If you attend through the virtual platform, communicate this with your instructor.
  • You may be required to take proctored exams.

Linked

Courses have regular meetings at specific times at one of Butler’s physical campuses linked to other locations through an online video system. Students are expected to attend the location they registered for during the meeting time and participate in either the in-person meeting or the virtual meeting. The instructor provides activities and materials both in-person and on Canvas. The instructor may travel to other sites on a rotation so all students have the opportunity to participate in a traditional lecture.

  • Come to campus or to a designated site where the class is virtually linked.
  • Access course materials and activities both in-person and on Canvas.
  • On some occasions, faculty may rotate where the physical and virtual linked meetings occur.
  • You may be required to take proctored exams.

Blended

Coursework is divided into two separate components. A portion of the course is taught in a face-to-face environment at one of Butler’s physical campuses with the expectation that students physically attend those meetings. The other portion of the course is facilitated online and requires regular student access.

  • Come to campus for regular in-person meetings.
  • Access materials and activities both in-person and on Canvas.
  • You may be required to take proctored exams.

Online

Students are not required to come to one of Butler’s physical campuses or attend meetings at a specific time. All course materials, syllabus, activities and learning are facilitated through an online platform that students regularly access.

  • No on-campus requirement for lectures.
  • Access course materials and activities through Canvas.
  • You may be required to take proctored exams.

Online Live

Students are not required to come to one of Butler’s physical campuses but are required to attend virtual lectures at a designated time. Students need to regularly access the online platform for materials, syllabus, activities and virtual lectures.

  • No on-campus requirement for lectures.
  • Attend digital lectures at designated times.
  • Access course material and activities through Canvas.
  • You may be required to take proctored exams.
