College-Wide Support

Underlying and empowering the success of our students is an extensive network of support services that equip all of our employees to deliver a superior experience in higher education. From the management of our fiduciary responsibilities to our technological infrastructure to the college within a college in which we expand our skills, Butler functions as a collaborative community of diversely talented professionals.

The work we do behind the scene of the classroom is, in many ways, as dynamic as the exchange between instructor and student. Every day, in ways that often avoid our own notice, we are finding solutions to problems, building new pathways to learning or planning the next innovation in our quest to serve our students.

    Butler by the Numbers

The story of Butler is a story of empowerment. People discover their potential here and turn it into a future. College Relations & Marketing tells that story in many different ways and media with one goal in mind: To create new stories, year after academic year.

We’re not marketing widgets at Butler. We’re marketing futures. We communicate with people who are trying to make important, life-changing decisions, and we take that responsibility seriously. Whenever we publish a catalog, produce a commercial or design a brochure, we make it our mission to communicate clearly and accurately the strengths we have to offer. We want our students to come here well-informed about our programs, services and culture.

    Community is our middle name.

We are also actively engaged in informing the public about our college through press releases, our speakers bureau and media guide. Providing information and avenues of access to the expertise of our faculty and leadership is not only in keeping with our mission of service, but helps us build positive relationships with the communities we serve.

College Relations & Marketing also provides a support service to faculty and staff who need to connect with students or the community. We help to develop more effective communications that are consistent with the brand identity of the college. If you have projects we can help with, please contact us. We are always looking for new opportunities to share the story of a college that is all about serving its students’ success.

Thomas Edison once predicted the demise of the textbook, asserting that “It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture.” A century later, a dramatic transition toward mediated instruction is well under way. Online content, including the video variant of Edison’s “motion picture,” continues to explode our view of how we teach and how we learn.

Educational Technology is the portal through which Butler accesses online methods of curriculum delivery. Our primary focus is on the operation and support of Butler Online and its learning management system, Canvas.

Our department acts as a consultant to faculty, providing educational design support for online delivery of their courses. We also train instructors in course design and the use of a variety of applications and tools for course implementation and management.

We are committed as a college to embedding the same high standards of academic excellence in our online presence that has always been the hallmark of our traditional programs. We want to encourage students and faculty alike to connect with the Educational Technology staff whenever you need help or see an opportunity to improve our online tools or academic curricula.

The environment in which you learn can enhance or inhibit your success. Butler’s Facilities Management teams are dedicated to maintaining campuses that are comfortable, attractive settings in which to study, teach and work. The department’s responsibilities are supported by four separate teams:

    • General Services is responsible for building maintenance and construction, including heating and air conditioning, electrical service, carpentry and painting.
    • Technical Services ensures compliance with ADA and fire codes, maintains the doors and locking systems as well as building hardware and restroom accessories. This team also maintains Butler’s fleet of vehicles.
    • Roads and Grounds is the team to call if you need to move or store furniture or equipment or remove trash. They also make sure the grounds of each campus are landscaped and maintained.
    • Custodial Services keeps our buildings clean. They also prepare rooms and facilities for special events.
In addition, our Administrative Support team acts as the liaison with college faculty, staff, visitors and vendors. This group also manages key functions such as communications, finance, work orders and vehicle scheduling.

We encourage you to contact us whenever you identify a need for maintenance services anywhere on our campuses. We have also provided a number of online forms you can use to order services. Help us keep your college in the kind of shape that will always make you proud to be a part of it.

Effective teaching requires continuing faculty education. That has never been truer than it is today as tidal waves of technological evolutions transform the way students absorb information and the methods available to educators to engage those students in learning. The Office of Faculty Development plans develops and presents a diverse range of training programs that stimulate innovation and advance the skills of our instructors on a continuing basis.

To facilitate access to these programs and developmental tools, we deliver them online under the Faculty Tab in the Butler Pipeline. There you will find an extensive inventory of available workshops, websites, and conferences as well as books, videos, and other instructional materials that are available for check out through the L.W. Nixon Library.

We also present a number of face-to-face workshops throughout the academic year, starting with our in-service week at the beginning of each semester on both our El Dorado and Andover campuses.

Points can be earned for participation in our online and on-campus workshops which can result in stipend awards for our adjunct faculty and salary increases for full-time instructors.

The continuing development of our skills as educators not only advances the quality of education we provide our students but also freshens and stimulates our engagement in the profession of teaching. We welcome the input of our faculty regarding the training programs we provide. Please let us know if there are areas you would like us to address in upcoming workshops or through our online resources.

The planning and management of the college’s resources is primarily the responsibility of the Finance Division. The operating budgets for the school are developed and monitored here along with the financial reports which inform the strategic planning conducted by our President and Board of Directors. We also maintain inventory records on physical assets of the college.

Although the services provided by the Finance division are largely rendered in support of the internal operations of the college, they are essential to our financial strength and continuing capacity to serve students and grow with the needs of the community.
