Placement and Testing

Placement, Testing and Transcripts

At Butler, proper course placement is important to start you off on the right foot.  This is why we offer testing services and ask you to send in your transcripts.  Proper placement will help you earn college credit more quickly and assist you in achieving your goals.

We offer four types of placement tests:

  1. Math Placement Tests – Determine the right courses for your skill level.
  2. English Placement Tests – Determine the right courses for your skill level.
  3. CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) – Test out of certain college courses and earn credit for what you already know.
  4. GED (General Educational Development) Testing – Earn a high school equivalency diploma and open new education and career opportunities.

Official college transcripts and/or military credit can be sent (from your previous institution) electronically to registrar@butlercc.edu or mailed to:

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you do not have to take all four tests.  The type of tests you take will depend on your academic background, your educational goals, and prior experience.

After applying, students should check Butler’s testing requirements or speak with an advisor. Our team helps determine which (if any) tests are necessary.

If you have prior knowledge in a subject, CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams may allow you to test out of certain college courses, saving you time and money on your degree.

For those who haven't completed high school, GED (General Educational Development) testing provides a second chance to earn a high school equivalency diploma, opening doors to college and career opportunities.

    • ACCUPLACER ESL (English as a Second Language) is on the computer, and it is untimed
    • The MMPA (My Math Plan Assessment) test is Butler's own math diagnostic test, administered on the computer. Depending on whether you take MMPA #2 or MMPA - Pre-Algebra, your testing time will vary. The average student's testing time is about 90 minutes.
