Advising

Why Meet with an Advisor?

Academic advisors help current students do more than just enroll in classes. Here are a few more reasons why you should make an appointment with an advisor:

  • Discuss degree completion and complete paperwork
  • Find courses you need to stay on track toward your degree plan
  • Better understand college policies and procedures
  • Changing your major
  • Dropping a course
  • Struggling academically (GPA is in a danger of falling below 2.0)
  • Planning to transfer to another college or university

Make an Advising Appointment

Advising appointments are for enrollment only. If you have not yet applied, visit Getting Started and follow the steps.

Appointments are NOT required and are limited during peak enrollment times. Students can walk-in to any location and meet with an advisor without an appointment. Current or returning students in good standing can fill out the release to enroll online form and get permission to enroll themselves online.

    Best Practices and Success Strategies

Students who are actively involved in their own education tend to excel academically and accomplish their educational goals. Here are a few recommendations that will help you succeed.

    • Identify the resources Butler has available to help you succeed.
    • Identify how you learn best. Do you learn by feeling, watching, doing, or thinking?
    • Read your course syllabus and quickly identify the best way to contact your instructor, course attendance policies, instructions, and due dates for completing and turning in assignments.
    • Communicate with your instructors regarding your academic progress.
    • Don’t overload your school schedule as it relates to work and family obligations. Too many commitments can cause students to do poorly in their classes.
    • Plan on two hours of study time per credit hour in your semester schedule. Credit hours x 2 hours of study outside of class = total in class and study hours per week
