At Butler Community College, taking College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests offers students an opportunity to accelerate their academic journey and save valuable time and money. CLEP exams allow students to demonstrate their knowledge in various subject areas and earn college credit without having to take the actual course.
Taking CLEP tests at Butler Community College offers several key benefits for students looking to accelerate their academic journey:
By taking CLEP tests at Butler, you’re making a smart choice to advance your education efficiently and cost-effectively.
CLEP testing at Butler is completed in our Andover & McConnell locations. Each testing session has limited space, so early registration is advised. Tests are by Appointments Only. To make an appointment to test, contact the testing center via e-mail testing@butlercc.edu.
You will be required to pay a $20 administrative fee to Butler at the Accounts Receivable Office. Forms of payment are credit and debit cards, check, or money order. The exam fee is paid directly to CLEP not to Butler. Visit www.collegeboard.org/clep for more information.
Colleges and universities have different policies on CLEP exam scores and the number of credits they award. Before taking a CLEP test, it’s up to you to check whether your chosen school will accept your score. If you plan to transfer from Butler to a four-year college or university, be sure to contact an advisor at that institution before taking a CLEP exam. They can confirm their specific CLEP credit requirements. Keep in mind that your new school will evaluate your original CLEP score based on their policies, rather than simply accepting the credit Butler has awarded.
To earn CLEP credit at Butler, you must meet the minimum score set by the English and Mathematics Departments. If you pass, your CLEP exam score will appear as "CR" (credit) on your transcript. The Butler Registrar awards CLEP credit with approval from the appropriate dean. In most cases, you’ll need to score in at least the 50th percentile to receive credit. You can apply up to 30 CLEP credit hours toward graduation.
While CLEP exams can help you earn college credit, they do not fulfill all degree requirements. To graduate from Butler, you must complete at least 15 credit hours in residence (courses taken directly at Butler).
If you have questions about earning credit through exams, contact the Registrar or Advising offices for guidance.
Nursing students can use CLEP exams to fulfill any of the seven prerequisite courses. However, since CLEP exams award credit without a letter grade, Butler considers CLEP credits equivalent to a grade of C when calculating your final GPA for program admission. Keep this in mind if you're aiming for a higher GPA to strengthen your application.
If you’re taking a CLEP exam at Butler’s McConnell Test Center, please note that exam fees are no longer collected on-site. Instead, you must register and pay through the College Board portal before arriving for your test.
