Math Matters

Collect and understand data, rephrase and solve real world problems in a quantitative framework and communicate evidence-based analysis to others. Whether you advance to Differential Equations or stop at College Algebra, we offer you a strong foundation in math.

Mathematical Challenges for All Majors

We offer a range of classes to lead you to success in your undergraduate studies and perhaps even a math career. No matter what types of math you need to succeed, you can count on us. You don’t need to be a math major to take our courses!

Math Lessons in Modules

Don’t let math hinder your educational goals. When you take Butler’s Math Module courses, you earn credit for the concepts you already know and focus on what you need to practice more. Our students succeed at a 20% higher rate with our Math Modules structure.

We offer many algebra courses split up into three five-week module formats per semester. This structure allows students to focus on the concepts they struggle with and take control of their college-level math experience. If you do not pass a specific module, you can immediately retake it, rather than waiting a full semester to try again.

Take the My Math Plan assessment to see which modules you need.

    Math Placement and Study Guides

All students admitted to Butler must have a math placement test score in order to enroll in any Butler math course. (Butler accepts ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER, and COMPANION)

    • If you do not have college level math credits or math placements scores from the last three years, you will be required to take the My Math Plan Assessment. Testing hours vary depending on campus location.

    • If you do have a math placement score (ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER, or COMPANION) within the last three years, we may be able to place you based on your scores. See an advisor for your options.

    • If you graduated from high school within the last three years, we may be able to place you based on your math scores and GPA. See an advisor for your options.

    • If you have taken a college level math class, we may be able to place you based on your college transcript (unofficial or official). See an advisor for your options.

    Math "Live" Online

We offer several different math courses in a live online format. That means virtual classes held at scheduled times with an instructor to teach and answer questions in real-time. It's like taking a class from your living room!

Requirements for Online Math (MA) Courses

All online math courses require proctored exams. The total number of proctored exams varies from course to course, but all require a proctored final exam.

Proctored exams are required assessments that must be taken in a face-to-face academic environment. If the student lives within 60 miles of a Butler site, they must take the exam at a Butler Testing Center. If the student is over 60 miles from a Butler site during the exam, they must arrange for a proctor at an approved testing center to supervise the student during the exam. Any expenses incurred in acquiring a proctor are the student's responsibility.

Some online math courses do not use Canvas for all course content. These courses use a third-party program or website that requires an access code, which can often be purchased with or without a physical textbook. Instructors provide instructions for accessing these third-party tools in their Canvas course shells. Contact Bethany Chandler bchandle@butlercc.edu with questions.

    Alumni and International Math Majors

Our alumni do amazing things after leaving Butler. Wes Nyberg was a recipient of the Hubbard Award of Excellence, Butler's highest award and scholarship, and currently works at Professional Engineering Consultants, Inc. in Wichita. Wes earned a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Kansas State University.

If you are an international student, find out more information on our International Students advising page

    Beyond Butler

Students interested in transferring to a four-year Engineering program may be interested to know that Kansas State University has an entire page dedicated to transferring from Butler.

Students interested in Wichita State's Engineering program should review the information on WSU’s Engineering website. You must complete three of the listed options to earn an Engineering degree.
