Get Started!

One Step Further

During this two semester course, you earn your Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS), prehospital trauma life support (PHTLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

Butler is one of few colleges in Kansas that offers training in this highly sought-after field. Let us get you ready to make an impact during emergency situations. Classes consist of both online materials and attendance on select Fridays during this fall and spring course.

More Responsibility, Higher Pay

Learn a higher level of patient care, how to administer 20-25 medication and intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) infusion. Practice full cardiac monitoring interoperation with ECG interpretation and cardiac arrest management. Understand the pathophysiology of your patient's presentation to design and implement an appropriate treatment plan.

Hybrid Format Learning

We understand you have responsibilities outside of the classroom. Our hybrid learning model gives you schedule flexibility to learn while you work, take care of family or do other tasks.

In your fall semester, you come to in-person class two Fridays per month while engaging online the rest of the time. In your second semester during spring, you attend two Friday lab sessions per month and complete clinical and field internship rotations.

Grizzlies in the Wild

You gain plenty of hands-on training with area hospitals during your 120 hour clinical rotations. You also engage in a field internship for 264 hours as the third provider at a 911 EMS service. Part of the field internship challenges you to serve as the lead provider for 25 calls.

For your convenience, most clinical rotations and field rotations can be arranged at locations near your residence. While an AEMT is not expected to have the knowledge or perform at paramedic levels, many of the concepts and skills will be taught at the paramedic level.

    • Be certified at EMT level in Kansas
    • Copy of immunization records.
    • Pass background check and urine drug screen.
    • Must be 17 years of age or older.

All students must satisfy clinical requirements by the end of the fifth week of class. Immunization and Health Records must be submitted prior. Students who do not meet these requirements will be dropped from the course.

Some students find that paramedic school is the best option, however for others AEMT is the better choice. The AEMT class is shorter than the paramedic class, meaning earlier employment.

The current cost of a paramedic class is around $9,000-$10,000. On the other hand the AEMT course is more cost effective. (see the next question).

There are no prerequisites for the AEMT course, so as soon as you have completed your EMT, you can enroll. On the other hand, the paramedic course has multiple prerequisites that can take several semesters to complete. There is an additional cost involved with completion of these prerequisites.

Depending on your learning style, paramedic courses might be better achieved by taking it in two steps, first getting the majority of ALS level knowledge in the AEMT class thus making you better prepared for the paramedic class.

$3,600, which includes tuition, books, student fees, exam fees and insurance.

Yes! This program is Kansas Promise Act eligible, meaning if you meet the qualifications, you can complete this course free of cost! More information is available on the Kansas Promise Scholarship page.

There is also a scholarship designated for AEMT students.

This course is designed to produce competent, confident and compassionate Advanced Life Support providers. Unlike others offered in the area, our course far exceeds the minimum education required by the state of Kansas for AEMT certification.

After successfully completing your two semesters, you are ready to challenge the national exam and hit the streets providing ALS level services to the sick and injured. You use your skills, learned concepts and critical thinking to the full scope of practice permitted by the Kansas Board of EMS.

We believe if you ask any service that has employed Butler's AEMTs and those trained at other institutions, they will tell you our AEMTs are better prepared to provide quality care.

The course is designed so that during the first semester, the student is expected to read and review all the material in the assignments. There will be limited review of the material during face to face days but the student will be expected to use the acquired knowledge during face to face days. If this type of learning does not fit your learning style this may not be the best class for you.

During second semester, the student will be engaged in clinical rotations and field internship. There will be no online reading/learning assignments.

The Devin Reneé Burress Memorial Scholarship Fund for EMS Education

Devin Reneé Burress passed away June 5, 2009 as a passenger in a motor vehicle accident. She was a 16-year-old senior at Augusta High School. Devin was born in El Dorado, Kansas on June 10, 1992, the daughter of James "Jeb" Eldon and LeeAnne (Dennett) Burress. Devin‘s desire was to help people in their time of need.

This memorial scholarship is to continue her good work through those who have that same desire. Devin, having a big heart and smile, was one to always put others before her. She loved to make people laugh no matter the situation or how she felt. Known as a founder of misfits and underdogs who were maybe in bad family situations or just not considered popular, she would go out of her way to help them and make them feel better about themselves and a true friend until the end. In her short life, she had been involved in instrumental music, sports, drama and other activities, along with a job at Pizza Hut.

Devin’s goal was to become a Certified Nurse Aid her senior year of high school, then obtain her Associate of Science degree as a Paramedic like her dad. Simply put, Devin was and still is a beloved daughter, sister, friend and a true angel to all who knew her.
