Earn your associate degree in history to understand what makes countries and nations tick. History gives you a valuable perspective into the peoples and cultures from around the world. You’ll be better equipped to plan for a better future and understand others in the world, whether they’re close to home or far away.

It’s All History

Learn extensively about American history, including the pre-Columbian era, the Civil War, Reconstruction and more recent events. Turn back in time to the Paleolithic era (Stone Age) and track the growth of modern civilization.

Discover the earliest human communal organization, the maritime revolution and our current global culture. Interpret and evaluate competing theories for internal relations events of the 20th and 21st centuries. This includes key issues regarding conflict and war, international organization and law, and human rights. Understand regional integration, international political economy, global resource management and how technology influences the factors.

    Butler and Emporia BEST Partnership

    From Student to Teacher

    Many of our students who take History classes intend to pursue a degree in teaching. If you are considering becoming a teacher, check out our partnership with Emporia State University, home of the National Teachers Hall of Fame. Butler and Emporia State have teamed up so students can earn a four-year teaching degree while staying on either the Andover or El Dorado Butler campuses. The BEST Program is designed for students who wish to earn their Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.

    Frank H. Cron History Award

    This award is presented by the Butler County Historical Society to a graduating sophomore who has a fascination with history.

    Frank H. Cron (1868-1963), El Dorado banker, legislator and philanthropist was born in Pennsylvania, came to Kansas at the age of 13, and quickly established himself as one of the “up and coming” young men on the Western frontier. He was a school teacher in Douglass and in Augusta until he chose a career in banking where he worked throughout the remainder of his life. He was the first president of the Butler County Historical Society.

    A graduating sophomore who has completed all required history courses in order to receive an Associate of Science or an Associate of Arts degree in History is eligible for the award. In addition, the student should demonstrate high standards of civic pride and American patriotism for the award to be granted. The recipient will receive a medal of honor and name on a plaque on permanent display in the museum.
