Learn to write tight, clear and concise sentences. Butler’s English & literature program is designed to grow your skills and your confidence in the art of transforming thoughts into powerful written words. Strengthen your writing skills, reading mastery and critical thinking by understanding the complexities of the English language. Not only will you hone your craft, but you will also advance the way you think about stories, reality and theoretical situations.
Our courses range from American literature classes to the introduction to poetry to writing composition classes. Through a curriculum of literature exploration, creative writing and structured composition, our program immerses you in all facets of college English.
Clear communication, legible sentence structure and effective word choice is crucial to a successful career path in most industries. Want to ask your boss for a well-deserved raise? You’ll learn to write convincing and professional correspondence with confidence. Ever had an issue with a political agenda? You’ll learn to move an audience effectively and efficiently with your words.
We offer online literature classes and allow students to take our English courses as either gen ed classes or as a dedicated program study.
If you find English courses difficult, Butler offers a refreshing and challenging approach to beginning writing classes called the Advanced Learning Program (ALP). With ALP, you can move through developmental writing classes quickly and successfully. ALP instructors are specially trained in teaching methods to help support your academic career. You’ll be surrounded by peers, informed by contemporary readings and stimulated by college work.
Nationally, ALP is considered one of the most effective learning models in developmental English and has helped thousands of students. Butler was the first college to bring this new, dynamic approach to Kansas. Research has found that Butler ALP students pass their classes at higher rates than conventional English students at the same levels.
How ALP Works:
Reach an audience by submitting your creative work to one of two campus journals. The Scan accepts academic essays and The Quill accepts works of poetry and fiction. You can also work on the student newspaper or college magazine and could earn a scholarship as part of the experience.
No matter what your dream job is, our instructors will give you the building blocks to earn your bachelor’s degree at a four-year university or start your career right away in positions like:
Teacher
Writer and/or editor
Journalist
Copywriter
These are some examples of courses in our English and Literature program.
