Butler’s English & literature program is designed to immediately grow your skills and confidence in the art of transforming thoughts into powerful written words. Strengthen your writing, reading mastery and critical thinking skills by understanding the complexities of the English language. Hone your craft while you advance the way you think about stories, reality and theoretical situations.
Through a curriculum of literature exploration, creative writing and structured composition, our program immerses you in all facets of the English language.
Clear communication, sentence structure and effective word choice are crucial to a successful career path in almost any industry. Want to ask your boss for a well-deserved raise? At Butler you’ll learn to write convincing professional correspondence with confidence. Need to win over a group of co-workers or friends? You’ll learn to move an audience effectively and efficiently with your words.
We offer online literature classes and allow students to take English courses as either gen eds or as a dedicated program of study.
Reach an audience by submitting your creative work to one of two campus journals. The Scan accepts academic essays and The Quill accepts works of poetry and fiction. You can also work on the student newspaper or college magazine and could even earn a scholarship as part of the experience.
No matter what your dream job is, our instructors will give you the building blocks to earn your bachelor’s degree at a four-year university or start your career right away in positions like:
Teacher
Writer/Editor
Journalist
Copywriter
These are some examples of courses in our English and Literature program.
Select English & Literature courses qualify for our Open Education Resources (OER), where we provide some or all required course materials, saving you money.
We offer a supportive and stimulating approach to developmental writing classes called the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP).
Is ALP right for you? If you place at a developmental level or don't feel prepared for college-level English, you can enroll in two corequisite English courses. These courses are taught by the same professor and are carefully integrated to guide your growth in writing.
How do we help you succeed? Your individual learning, motivation and confidence matter to us. ALP professors use scaffolding, focused learning objectives and active engagement strategies to deliver meaningful lessons to you.
Required corequisite courses taught by the same professor:
EG 060 Fundamentals of English
EG 101 English Composition I
Nationally, ALP is considered one of the most effective learning models in developmental English and has helped thousands of students. Butler was the first college to bring this new, dynamic approach to Kansas. Research has shown that developmental students enrolled in ALP pass EG 101 English Composition I at a higher rate and significantly shorter time span than they would have in a conventional developmental program.
