Receive broad-based knowledge that prepares you to study for the MCAT as you learn organic chemistry, biology, physics and human anatomy. You will be prepared to attend a four-year university program with our strong scientific foundation that successfully prepares you for this challenging and rewarding career.
We offer a broad exposure to the industry to help you hone your interest area and find your passion in the vast array of options within the biological sciences.
You’ll learn cadaver dissection and bedside manners. You’ll use state-of-the-art medical equipment and see what working in a lab is like when you complete your first two years of required courses at Butler. You’ll also enjoy significantly lower tuition than a four-year school.
In the pre-med program, you are encouraged to job shadow at El Dorado’s Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, other medical facilities or at doctor’s offices. This allows you to see first-hand what the day-in day-out routines are of being a doctor. These important internships can also help you get your foot in the door for future employment.
Butler begins preparing you for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), which you will take during your junior year at your four-year college. The MCAT consists of four parts, including sections on chemical and physical sciences, critical analysis, biological and biochemical subject matter, and foundations of behavior.
After you transfer and finish your bachelor's degree in your chosen pathway, you can confidently start your career in positions like:
These are some examples of courses in our Pre-Medicine program.
If you love science experiments and lab work, you may love working as a student lab assistant. For just 10-15 hours per week, you earn money and gain experience at the same time. When you become a lab assistant, you learn how to use Petri dishes to grow microbes, incubate specimens, and care for a variety of lab equipment. And your work schedule will not conflict with your own class schedule. Questions? Contact Susan Forrest at sforrest@butlercc.edu or 316-322-3251.
For several years (like decades), our Butler students come together with faculty and host hundreds of Butler County fourth and fifth graders as they learn about water quality during the Walnut River Water Festival. Butler’s biology professors, guest instructors and the Butler County Conservation District Coordinator teach area elementary students about water conservation. Students from the BEST (Butler & Emporia from Students to Teachers) program lead classes while Butler biology students serve as runners and classroom assistants. This is a great volunteer opportunity!
Qualified students in eligible programs can earn their two-year degree and have their tuition, fees and books paid for.
