When you attend classes in biology at Butler, you’re surrounded by biology professors who motivate you to inquire and investigate. When you study biology, you study the science of nature. And the natural world is fascinating! Learn why certain bacterial cultures thrive in the human body. Understand why the human bone count decreases from 270 to 206 in the aging process. And that’s just a drop in the petri dish!
Our students typically major in biology, nursing, healthcare or biotechnology. You can also use our biology courses as a starting point to a teaching career. We support your academic and career goals, whether you decide to transfer for further education or begin your career straight away. We offer a broad exposure to the industry to help you hone your interest area and find your passion in the vast array of options within the biological sciences.
No matter what your dream job is, our instructors will give you the building blocks to earn your bachelor’s degree at a four-year university or start your career right away in positions like:
These are some examples of courses in our Biology program.
Push yourself with honor’s biology. Biology majors may take Majors Biology I and II with the honor’s option. These courses include a semester-long project. For more information about honor’s biology, contact Susan Forrest at sforrest@butlercc.edu.
If you love science experiments and lab work, you may love working as a student lab assistant. For just 10-15 hours per week, you earn money and gain experience at the same time. When you become a lab assistant, you learn how to use Petri dishes to grow microbes, incubate specimens, and care for a variety of lab equipment. And your work schedule will not conflict with your own class schedule. Questions? Contact Susan Forrest at sforrest@butlercc.edu or 316.322.3251.
For several years (like decades), our Butler students come together with faculty and host hundreds of Butler County fourth and fifth graders as they learn about water quality during the Walnut River Water Festival. Butler’s biology professors, guest instructors and the Butler County Conservation District Coordinator teach area elementary students about water conservation. Students from the BEST (Butler & Emporia from Students to Teachers) program lead classes while Butler biology students serve as runners and classroom assistants. This is a great volunteer opportunity!
